Best Practices in Funded Journalism and Trust in Local News Media:  Perspectives from Philanthropies, Newsrooms, and the U.S. Public

Synopsis

The local newspaper industry faces challenges like declining ad revenue, reduced paid subscriptions and competition from online platforms. Philanthropies have stepped in, initially supporting non-profit news start-ups and later aiding commercial local newspapers through non-profit intermediaries. This white paper examines the impact of philanthropic funding on journalism, using extensive research, stakeholder interviews and a national survey. Highlights include the importance of editorial independence, alignment of goals and transparency in funded journalism. The public shows low awareness but a positive attitude towards funded journalism, finding it more trustworthy than business-supported journalism. Recommendations for enhancing funded local journalism include establishing common standards, educating the public, emphasizing investigative journalism, increasing access by removing paywalls and enhancing journalism’s role in community engagement.
